ZinCo USA is pleased to announce the 2007 schedule for ZinCo Seminars: Introduction to Green Roof Design throughout the United States.  Our initial course offering is “Introduction to Green Roof Design.”  ZinCo is an approved provider of ASLA continuing education credits:

Sept 24: Boston, MA
Oct 4: Los Angeles (Glendale), CA
Oct 10: San Francisco, CA
Oct 15: New York, NY
Oct 17: Philadelphia (King of Prussia), PA
Oct 19: Washington, DC
Nov 6: Chicago, IL

Introduction to Green Roof Design
This seminar provides an introduction to the functioning and design options for built-up green roof systems. Following is a more detailed description of the program elements.

Why Green Roofs?
This introductory lecture provides a review of the environmental and economic benefits that green roofs provide. With its modern origins as a means of reducing stormwater runoff, the understanding of green roof benefits has expanded to include wildlife habitat, urban green space, noise reduction, longer waterproofing design life, improved insulation, and a variety of other benefits.

Roof Technology for Green Roofs
This lecture will provide a brief overview of the types of roof construction and how they would relate to green roofs. Green roofs are compatible with a wide variety of roof types and waterproofing membranes, a fact that is often overlooked in the US market.

Green Roof Vegetation
In this session, there will be an overview of requirements for successful vegetation establishment on a green roof. The purpose and function of each layer in a green roof build-up will be presented, as well as a summary of green roof classifications and how requirements vary for different types of green roofs.

Green Roof System Build-ups
After lunch, this lecture will pick-up where the vegetation lecture left off—by developing in more detail how modifications in the system build-ups can provide better support for vegetation across the spectrum from extensive to intensive green roofs.

Pitched Green Roofs
Pitched roofs are a different breed of roofs from typical low slope roofs, and they impose a different set of requirements for green roofs. This lecture will provide an overview of these requirements and review sample projects where pitched roofs have been implemented successfully.

Hard Landscapes and Green Roofs
As more intensive landscapes are developed on roof tops, there is generally an increasing desire to incorporate hardscaping into the design. At its simplest level, this includes walkways, but in more complex applications, this may involve driveways, roadways, complex water features, sports facilities in a recreational park setting, or many other possibilities. This lecture introduces solutions to help achieve these complex designs.

Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
This section provides a brief overview of some of the most common problems encountered after a green roof has been constructed. The best approach to resolve these problems is almost always to have a good design in the first place!

Please visit the ZinCo USA website for contact information, registration, and updates regarding both the course offerings and schedules.

Green Roof Market Development Symposium:  Save The Date for the Atlanta, GA Green Roof Market Development Symposium on Thursday, September 20, 2007, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, at the Emory Conference Center.  Co hosted by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, The Home Depot Foundation, Earth Pledge, and Southface Energy Institute, we had a full day of learning, brain storming and information sharing.

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities is co-hosting, with various municipal governments, a series of symposiums across North America. Primary objectives of these symposiums are to demonstrate the benefits of a green roof system and to develop an action plan on how to establish a local green roof industry through research and policy development. These one-day symposia will provide an opportunity for participants to learn from local and national experts about the general design and implementation of green roofs.

The Symposium featured: morning sessions, case studies, and afternoon focus groups, and the development of an Atlanta Green Roof Action Plan.

The goal of the morning session is to educate Symposium participants on the basic principles of green roofs. The session will begin with an introductory presentation by a GRHC representative on the components and types of green roof systems.

Case studies of local green roof projects will follow, and will explore topics such as the challenges of upkeep, energy benefits, stormwater management, and downtown re-investment and smart growth. Case studies and morning sessions are presented by local and national green roof experts, and will help to define the benefits of green roof systems as they relate to the City of Atlanta.

The afternoon focus group sessions are facilitated by city staff and will help to describe the obstacles of green roof implementation. This session is followed by a 30-minute plenary reporting and discussion period, in which an Action Plan Summary is developed and distributed to all attending delegates following the workshop.

Registration for this event was $195 US, and includes a one-year individual membership to Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

Confirmed exhibitors include Colbond, Inc., GreenGrid®, American Hydrotech, and JDR Enterprises, Inc.

EcoManor, Atlanta, Georgia

A replay about the building of EcoManor in Atlanta, Georgia was offered on Sunday, August 5 at 7:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) on HGTV's Ground Breakers.  One of the most environmentally progressive homes in the country is nestled in the heart of Atlanta’s historic Buckhead neighborhood. EcoManor (www.ecomanor.com), set to be the first U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified residence in the Southeast, was built to inspire a change in urban design by showcasing how the latest green technologies can be incorporated into a traditionally beautiful Tudor house.

EcoManor will serve as an educational tool for builders, architects, designers, landscapers and homeowners to promote green living, conservation and advanced residential building practices.

Over the three-car garage and through several sets of French doors overlooking the backyard is the rooftop garden. J-DRain Geonet (www.j-drain.com) was installed under tapered insulation board, installed to create sloped drainage to the drain hole and into the rainwater harvest system. Rainwater will be collected from the rooftop and used for flushing the toilets and irrigating the landscape. The Water ReUse System reclaims the gray water for irrigating the landscape, primarily the lawn.

J-DRain Greenroof System (GRS), one-inch drain core with water retention cups, was installed on top of the insulation layer and will assist in capturing rainwater and using it as a resource for the plants.

Though a much larger home than previously occupied the site, less storm water exits the site now than before because the RainHarvest System (www.rainharvestcompany.com) captures it and reclaims it. The water irrigates the landscape then naturally percolates into the soil instead of flowing down the gutters into the street.

The lush and beautiful gardens surrounding the Eco Manor will not be a burden on the local water supply. As drinking water becomes more valuable, and water bans may become permanent, the homeowner’s will always be able to irrigate their gardens with their collected gray water.

You can watch their building process and see the result on on HGTV's Ground Breakers.

EcoManor, Atlanta, Georgia

EcoManor, Atlanta, Georgia

On Saturday, June 9, 10:30 a.m. (Eastern Time) HGTV's Ground Breakers presented an episode about the building of EcoManor in Atlanta, Georgia.

Children & City Join Efforts to GO GREEN
24 Trees Planted in Prospect Park, with Helping Hand from Japan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                 PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

When: Tuesday, May 22, 2007, 10:15-11:00am
What: 1st Graders from The Calhoun School will plant 24 trees in Prospect Park, with the help of a revolutionary, biodegradable planter from Japan.
Where: Prospect Park, Brooklyn (meeting place at Prospect Park’s Wollman Rink, 10:15am)
Who: Calhoun’s students were assisted in the project by the New York State Environmental Conservation group, the New York City Parks & Recreation Dept., the Mayor’s Office, NYC Borough President’s Office, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, Green Thumb, and the Japanese foundation, Kami Nekkon Association, www.kitanet.org.

Why: The Calhoun School’s yearlong theme, Go Green, culminated in the study of ecology and what individuals can do to contribute to a healthy environment. This particular project involved two classes of first graders, their teachers and parents, support from various city officials, and a Japanese Foundation that provided free biodegradable planters--underscoring that environmental protection is a global effort.

Twenty-four 1st graders from The Calhoun School will culminate many months of study about ecology by planting 24 trees in a woodland area of Prospect Park on Tuesday morning, May 22, 10:15am-11pm. The planting underscores Mayor Bloomberg’s plan for planting a million trees in the city in the next decade or so, as part of his “Greener Greater New York” plans, which he announced on Earth Day in April.

Calhoun’s 1st graders are the first to plant trees in the New York area using revolutionary recycled paper planting pots, supplied for free by the Kami Nekkon Association in Japan (ww.kitanet.org). The recycled paper pots are biodegradable and completely eco-friendly and sustainable. They require no digging; the recycled cardboard decomposes as the trees take root. Millions of trees have been successfully planted and grown with these pots around the world, in various weather and soil conditions, including such difficult planting areas as Beijing and Mongolia. The plantings in Prospect Park will be preceded with brief remarks by a Park ranger.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation provided seedlings for the planting project, including a mix of wildlife trees such as Elderberry, Silky Dogwood, Toringo Crabapple and Wetland Rose. The combination of those mix wildlife trees will attract a variety of songbirds and help promote fruiting and pollination, which in turn supports other wildlife species.

The 1st graders have been working very hard on the Tree Planting Project since the beginning of this school year. The curriculum focused on trees and everything related to trees, including paper recycling, air quality, wildlife animals that depend on trees, and waste management. “It’s not enough to talk to the children about the problems related to our environment,” says first grade teacher Daniel Ercilla. “You must also teach them how to be constructive and pro-active.” The relationship with Kami Nekkon Association in Japan, which supplied the recycled planters, was arranged by Heather Sasaki-Parker, the parent of a Calhoun first grader.

The Calhoun School, a progressive, independent school located in the heart of Manhattan’s Upper West Side, serves 700 students ranging from three-year-olds to twelfth graders. A major component of the school’s mission is community service, which is integrated into the academic and co-curricular life of the students. Calhoun’s students work with hundreds of organizations including the West Side Campaign Against Hunger, the New York Blood Bank, GMHC, West End Intergenerational Residence, Riverside Park Fund, Children for Children, and various national and international charitable organizations.

See The Calhoun School project profile in The Greenroof Projects Database here.  For more information, please contact Beth Krieger, Director of Communications, The Calhoun School, 212.497.6527, www.calhoun.org.

5) ASTM and FLL Standards Workshop
The ASTM and FLL Standards Workshop was offered at the following time:
1. Sunday, April 29th, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Until recently the only accepted guidelines for green roof construction were those developed by Forschungsgesellschaft Landschaftsentwicklung Landschaftsbau. e.V. (FLL), in Germany. Although many green roof products available in North America have been tested in Europe and meet FLL standards or have FLL certification, there have been no guidelines specific to the North American marketplace. The rapidly developing green roof market in North America needs a comprehensive set of green roof standards which recognize the FLL standards but also adapt them to avoid unnecessary risk and provide the opportunity for consistent profitability and success.

The ASTM (American Standards for the Testing of Materials) Green Roof Task Force (E.06.71.07) chaired by Michael Gibbons (Architectural Systems Inc.) is addressing this need by developing guidelines and testing procedures specifically for green roof products. The good news is, that while development continues, four standards have already been completed and published. These four standards establish a common basis for comparing fundamental green roof properties, such as maximum weight and moisture retention potential.

In this half-day workshop leading researchers currently using ASTM and FLL standards shared the results of their research and will discuss anticipated future ASTM standards based on the FLL model.

In this workshop, you will learn:

How to interpret the four ASTM standards and other FLL tests currently being used in North American testing laboratories
How these standardized tests will affect the North American industry as their use becomes more widespread
Why they are important to designers, specifiers and manufacturers
Why you should consider testing your products
Costs of conducting performance tests
New standards and test procedures under development/adapted from FLL

7) Green Roof Policy Development Workshop
The Green Roof Policy Development Workshop was offered at the following time:
1. Sunday, April 29th, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Planners across North America are becoming increasingly interested in green roofs and their potential to mitigate some of the damaging environmental effects of new and existing development in an urban setting.

Green roofs provide a wide range of benefits, which include helping to implement low impact development objectives such as storm water management, air quality improvement, the provision of additional useable green spaces and energy savings.

However, many developers and building owners will argue that green roofs add to the cost of construction and do not often provide sufficient short-term payback. Given the public as well as private benefits that green roofs offer, it has become increasingly important for policy makers to develop the types of incentives that will encourage or require new developments and retrofits to include green roofs.

This half-day workshop will examine what kind of incentives currently exist in other jurisdictions, how the incentives are tied to performance standards and how policy makers can assess what types of incentive programs will work best in their areas. It will also provide a framework for planners and governmental agencies to gain an understanding of the multi-faceted impacts of green roofs and areas of consideration for implementing green roof policy.

You will learn:
Case studies of municipalities that are implementing green roof policies/programs e.g. Chicago, Portland, Minneapolis, and New York
Ideas that lead to the eventual creation of green roof policy such as education, outreach to green roof industry, demonstration projects, research, removal of barriers to green roofs
Green roof policy framework

8) Conducing Green Roof Site Research Workshop

More Green Roofs for New York City!

Ten years have passed since Earth Pledge helped lead the push to install the first green roofs in New York City. Recently, Earth Pledge published Green Roofs: Ecological Design and Construction, showcasing a range of public and private applications that serve as models for Green Roofs. Hear from Leslie Hoffman about the progress that was made and her prognosis for the future.

Leslie Hoffman, who holds a degree in architecture and design, is executive director of Earth Pledge Foundation, which she has led since 1994. Hoffman, an avid gardener, has maintained a small organic coffee farm in Hawaii since 1990.

Green Roof Plants: Design Consideration and Maintenance Implications
A common assumption is that there is no maintenance needed once a green roof is built. However, the design determines not only plant choices, but also maintenance. The relationship between the two is often ignored. This talk covers some of the most common green roof design choices such as meadow-style planting, self sowing and massing, and their implication for maintenance. Ed Snodgrass discusses representative examples from the area to highlight these choices.

Ed Snodgrass is owner and president of Emory Knoll Farms, Inc. and Green Roof Plants. Ed lectures widely on green roofs at regional, national, and international conferences. His book Green Roof Plants, A Planting and Resource Guide was published in fall 2006 by Timber Press.

Retrofitting Existing Roofs as Green Roofs: Two Case Studies
Planning for a green roof from the start seems to be easy. But what if an existing roof should be retrofitted into a green roof? Drawing from two examples, the Green Roof at Harvard University-Graduate School of Design and the ASLA headquarters in Washington, D.C. Christian Werthmann illustrates the steps to take and obstacles you might encounter on your way to greening your roof.

Christian Werthmann, Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University–Graduate School of Design worked for landscape architecture offices in Germany and the U.S., including Peter Walker and Partners and Hargreaves Associates. His book Green Roofs–A Case Study. Michael Van Valkenburgh’s Associates Design for the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Headquarters, will be published in summer 2007.

The Green Roof PHOTO EXPO ran from February 21-23, 2007, at the Brisbane Technology Park Conference Centre, Miles Platting Road, Eight Mile Plains, Brisbane, Australia, and was an opportunity to TEST YOUR GREEN ROOF MARKET IN AUSTRALIA.  North American and European companies wishing to develop business connections in Australia and New Zealand were offered an economical way to do so.

It was via a sponsored poster at the Green Roof Photographic Exhibition, to accompany the Green Roofs for Australia two-day conference (see below).  The Photo Expo featured 100 full-color, large-scale posters depicting some of the world's best examples of green roofs (mostly in Europe and North America) along with company product and service descriptions.

The Brisbane Technology Park conference centre entrance in Miles Platting Road, Eight Mile Plains, about 12 kilometres south of down-town Brisbane.

The Brisbane Technology Park conference centre venue is capable of seating 400 to 900 attendees and exhibiting 100 green roof photo displays 1m x 2m.  Twelve exhibitor display booths were available in the foyer of the conference centre.  Cost of sponsoring each poster (1 metre wide by 2 metres deep) was A$290 (plus GST in Australia) or US$225 or 175 Euros.  The sponsor only had to email three to five high-quality digital images and about 500 words about the case study and greenroof service, product or system (by February 1, 2007, with full payment).

Green Roofs for Healthy Australian Cities then provided:

•  A professional design according to a common theme.

•  An email to the sponsor for proofing and approval of the design and caption (to be completed before February 10, 2007).

•  Supply of a 1m x 2m full-color poster for the exhibition.

•  Hire and mounting of a display stand for the poster.

•  A business card holder for each poster, so that the sponsor's business cards (at least 500 to be supplied by each sponsor) can be available for attendees.

Inclusion of the poster pictures and text and sponsor's full contact details in a CD of proceedings to be provided to each person attending the Green Roofs for Australia conference. The CD will also be contained in a front cover envelope in the printed conference proceedings to be sold to people not attending the conference.

Storage and subsequent use of the posters in other Australian cities in 2007 (an estimated subsequent audience of about 3,000 prospective members of Green Roofs for Healthy Australian Cities).

Display on the Green Roofs for Healthy Australian Cities website: www.greenroofs.org.au.

Green Roof ATRIUM DISPLAYS:

Twelve Atrium exhibitor displays were also available at the Green Roofs for Australia Conference and the Green Roof Photo Expo. Each was one metre deep by 3 metres long, with naming board and photo display panels.  Cost was A$1,500 per display stand, plus GST if applicable (US$1,125 or 910 Euros).

The BTP Atrium Plan

The two halls on the right have a capacity of 900 people, seated conference style.  The left hand hall is for the Green Roof Photo Expo.  Twelve exhibitor display stands at 1m deep x 3m wide are in the foyer.

Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to highlight your products and services to the Australian and New Zealand markets!  Learn more on the website www.greenroofs.org.au, and contact Geoff Wilson, Founder and Director of Green Roofs for Healthy Australian Cities, to become a part of this exciting event at: geoff@nettworx.info.
