Bulbs on roofs?

As we all sweat through the dog days of summer, we should all remember that fall will be approaching sooner than we think and those beads of sweat will be giving way to cool nights and frost.

Scilla and Sedum album
both breaking dormancy.

Fall is the time to plant bulbs and green roofs have been largely left out of the bulb discussion.  Are bulbs part of a green roof planting plan?  Can bulbs work on thin system green roofs?  Knowing that many of our modern Tulips came from the Anatolian region of Turkey, known for its hot dry summers, I thought species Tulips may have a chance on a green roof...   >>more

How Does Your Garden Grow?......Vertical!

Irwin Family hanging vegetable crops.

The early Spring is normally our busy show season and between the Go Green Expo NYC and GRSC in Baltimore, it is great to be back home.  Beside the busy spring show season it is also time to garden! Personally, my gardens have become my time to relax, and even better an opportunity to involve my family.  The kids help plant and my wife makes jam and pickles from what we harvest.

Since 3,000 BC families produced crops for their own consumption and some marginal barter. In 1840, 69% of the labor force was farming, in 1930 it was 21% and in 1990 only 2.6% of the labor force is farming (
www.agclassroom.org/gan/timeline/-index.htm).  There has been an obvious decline in farming in North America since the 1800’s.  Before we talk about green walls I want to review some key points in history about American agriculture.

From 1939 to 1945 the world was at war, and Americans were asked to divert materials and efforts to the war effort.  At the time this was a call for self-reliance, recycling, and conservation of raw materials.  Sounds like another definition of Sustainability … Compare the circa 2008 vs. the 1940 definition of self-reliance, amazing how history repeats itself.  The public was encouraged to plant “Victory Gardens” in all shapes and sizes.  “Nearly 20 million Americans answered the call.  They planted gardens in backyards, empty lots...         >>more

Penstemons for Green Roofs in the Midwest
By Brent Horvath, Nursery President and Grower
Graphics Courtesy Brent Horvath

At Intrinsic Perennial Gardens (IPG), located in Hebron, Illinois, we list about 900 different perennials for sale to the landscape and retail market in the Chicagoland area, including Milwaukee and Madison.  Over the last six years, greenroof plant sales have become an increasing part of our business.  While sedums are still the primary plants used on many green roofs, there are a great many penstemons that may work.

As you probably know, there are two main types of green roofs, extensive and intensive.  Extensive represents 3 to 5 inches of soil, where intensive represents 6 or more inches.  For this article I’m concentrating on an extensive greenroof trial situation, since the plants mentioned can be expected to do well in deeper soil.

Of course, there are many other variables when considering a green roof, including soil type and depth, average yearly rainfall/precipitation or irrigation, and hardiness zones.  The primary greenroof soil used in the Midwest is a baked clay product blended with peat and perlite; there are other mixes but this is the most commonly used in the area.  In northern Illinois our average yearly rainfall is 30-35 inches.  The majority of our green roofs here are in USDA Hardiness Zone 5...

Sustainable Roofing Technologies Column
By Ralph Velasquez

Dear Readers,

We all recognize the famous saying from the Muppets kingpin, Kermit the frog.  This has been ringing in my head a lot lately as my wife and I have been in the process of building a new sustainable home.  We have found out that in Tennessee anyway, this process can be difficult.

A few years ago, we sold our home on the golf course and decided to make a serious personal commitment to a more minimalist and green life style.  Now, we already had begun the process of downsizing our lifestyle years earlier and had continued this process when we moved to the golf course in 1999.  By today’s standards we had a modest home, a 1,900 sq. ft. condo on the 18th hole.  This had been prompted by our desire/need to move closer to our oldest daughter who was having our first grandchild.  When we decided to sell this property and move downtown, this was the initial erosion process of my golf game.  It wasn’t great to begin with then and today is unmentionable.

We had decided to move into downtown Nashville and get a condo in the city center.  This would allow me to move my offices downtown, reduce our need to drive anywhere, making a huge carbon impact reduction on a personal scale, since we could walk most every-where and further reduce our square footage of living space.  We made that move in the spring of 2005, downsizing even more to about 1,000 sq. ft.  While adjustment took a little bit of time, it wasn’t really all that long before we adjusted just fine to the small footprint and began to enjoy the city lifestyle.  While I enjoyed the city and loved all the time savings, ecological and logistical advantages, I did not enjoy the high-rise style building of our condo.  So after a little more than two years, our conversation turned to what else could we do to maintain a mini-malist lifestyle and get back into more of a house style of living?...   >>more

Vegetative roofs and solar panels are certainly more common in Germany on many types of property than the U.S., including single family residential.  Do we want to get this "organic?"  We'll see.

Inaugural Column for The Green Roof Guy

Same Guy, New Editor Name, Renewed Focus
By Kelly Luckett, LEED™ AP

I had hoped to be reporting on completed wind and fire guidelines that were headed for International Code Council (ICC) acceptance...    >>more

The G.R.E.E.N. Research Report

The great FROZEN green roof project

Dr. Bill Retzlaff of SIUE

A View from the Sky Trenches
The Minions Project: A Bio-Regional Greenroof Research Call

By Patrick Carey

I have never ceased to be surprised at the ingenuity and zeal of people determined to discover a solution to a problem.  With green roofs, living walls, and other biophilic building elements, some of the biggest challenges are the collecting and analyzing of data.  Every approach has its shortcomings.  If a manufacturer of a product or provider of a service offers research data, there is always the possibility of conflict of interest.  If an academic institution offers research data, the implications of...     >>more
